Planning a change to your home in Palm Beach or Jupiter? If so, here’s one question that might be top of mind: Should we hire an interior designer or a decorator?

It’s a common question, and an important one. While the terms are sometimes used interchangeably, they represent very different approaches to transforming your home.

Understanding the difference can help you make smarter decisions, avoid unnecessary costs, and ultimately create a home that reflects both your lifestyle and vision.

Interview Designer vs. Decorator: The Core Difference

At its simplest, the difference between an interior designer and a decorator comes down to finishing touches vs creation.

An interior decorator works with what already exists. They step into a finished space and enhance it visually – selecting furniture, coordinating colors, and adding those final layers that make a room feel complete.

An interior designer, conversely, looks at the bigger picture. We think about how a space works, flows, and supports your lifestyle, often before any finishes or furnishings are chosen. That can mean rethinking layouts, adjusting structural elements, and creating a space that feels as good as it looks.

For homeowners in Palm Beach and Jupiter, where homes are often both a personal retreat and an investment, this distinction really matters.

What Does an Interior Designer Do?

So, what does an interior designer do that sets us apart?

Interior designers are involved in the conceptualization and execution of a space from the ground up.

Our work often includes:

  • Space planning and layout optimization
  • Reimagining how rooms connect and flow
  • Selecting materials, finishes, and details
  • Coordinating with contractors and engineers
  • Overseeing renovations or new construction projects

Rather than simply decorating a room, designers ask deeper questions: How should this space function? Does it support your day-to-day life? What could be improved that you might not even realize yet?

That might lead to ideas such as:

  • Opening up walls to create better flow
  • Adjusting ceiling details to elevate the entire space
  • Reworking flooring transitions so everything feels cohesive
  • Incorporating custom-built elements tailored specifically to you

This level of involvement often results in a home that feels more natural, more functional, and more personal.

If you’re considering a larger transformation, Piper Gonzalez Designs is a great place to get a feel for our approach and design philosophy.

What Does an Interior Decorator Do?

Interior decorators focus on aesthetic enhancements. Their role begins after the structure and layout of a home are already established.

They typically help with:

  • Furniture selection and placement
  • Color palettes and paint choices
  • Styling with accessories, artwork, and textiles
  • Window treatments and soft furnishings

Decorating is often considered a “lighter lift” compared to design. Many clients can achieve the results they want by visiting local furniture stores or working with retail design consultants.

If your space already works well and you simply want it to feel more polished or updated, a decorator can be a great fit.

Why the Difference Matters in Palm Beach & Jupiter

In Palm Beach and Jupiter, the way a home works matters just as much as how it looks. It becomes an extension of your lifestyle, whether you’re entertaining, relaxing, or spending time with family, how your home functions plays a huge role in how it feels.

That’s where working with an interior designer can make a significant difference. Instead of layering new furniture into an existing layout, a designer helps you:

  • Make the most of your square footage
  • Improve natural light and flow
  • Create a space that feels intentional and truly customized

And just as importantly, they can often help you avoid unnecessary expenses along the way.

Another important difference in the interior designer vs decorator conversation is the level of customization.

Decorators often work with pieces that are readily available, sourced from local stores or showrooms, which can be a great option for quick updates. As interior designers, we tend to take a more tailored approach, designing custom furniture or built-ins, selecting unique materials and finishes, and adapting every detail to suit your lifestyle.

A great example of what this looks like in action is from one of our more recent luxury home renovation projects in Mirasol. Our clients originally purchased their home for its incredible views and size – big enough to host their large family.

The challenge was to create a home that felt intimate for everyday life, while still working beautifully when the house was full. Through thoughtful space planning, the entire experience of the space was reimagined.

The entry was simplified to draw your eye straight to the view. We reoriented the fireplace so it could be shared with the family room, and added a wine wall to subtly divide the dining and living areas.

In the kitchen, the layout was opened up to allow for a larger island to better support how the clients cook, gather, and entertain. The office was moved to what had been a primary sitting room, giving the clients a more meaningful view during the day, and the former office was transformed into a bar space.

The most impactful change happened in the primary suite. We transformed an existing au pair suite into a private laundry, an oversized closet, and a spacious his-and-hers bathroom connected by a larger shared shower.

This is where interior design goes beyond decorating, reshaping the entire space to better support how clients live every day.

A Smarter, More Streamlined Approach

One of the bigger misconceptions homeowners have is that every renovation or new build needs to involve multiple layers of professionals from the start. In reality, a more streamlined approach – like what we offer at Piper Gonzalez Design – can often lead to better results.

With the right interior design team, many clients are surprised by how much can be accomplished through intentional space planning and clear coordination.

Thanks to our exclusive partnership with Atlantic Builders and their extensive construction experience, we’re able to approach all our projects with creativity and practicality from day one. This close collaboration keeps everything aligned and avoids the disconnect that can happen when too many separate teams are involved.

Our construction partnership, coupled with our designers’ powerful ability to conceptualize spatial planning, helps our clients reimagine what’s possible within their homes.

By keeping the process streamlined and focussed, projects tend to move more efficiently and with fewer complications.

Interior Designer or Decorator: Which One Do You Need?

When comparing interior designers and decorators in Palm Beach and Jupiter, it should be clear that the difference goes far beyond terminology. Decorators help refine and polish a space that’s already complete.

Interior designers help reimagine what that space could be, making it more aligned with how you actually live. Sometimes that means moving walls; sometimes it means rethinking finishes like ceilings or floors. And sometimes it’s about uncovering opportunities you hadn’t even considered..

If you’re simply looking for a refresh, a decorator may be all you need. But if you’re looking to create a home that truly works for you, an interior designer can help you get there more thoughtfully – and often, more efficiently.
